The house that waited

A retired teacher had saved for his first home for thirty years. When he finally built it, he asked for only one thing: that the tamarind tree stay exactly where it was.

For thirty years, the plot in Mandya held nothing but a tamarind tree and a promise. The teacher had passed it on his walk to school every morning, and told his wife, more than once, that one day they would live beneath it.

When he retired and came to us, he brought a folded piece of paper with a rough square drawn on it, and a single instruction underneath. Not a number of bedrooms, not a style. Just this: the tree does not move.

What the family wanted

A modest, single-storey home for two, with room for grandchildren in the holidays. Cool floors for the summer, a veranda deep enough to sit out the afternoon, and light. He wanted to read in the mornings without switching on a bulb.

“The tree does not move. Everything else, you decide.”

The challenge

The tamarind sat almost dead centre of the plot, and its canopy claimed the best south-western light for most of the day. A conventional plan would have fought it, or quietly cut it down. Neither was on the table.

The idea

So we planned the house around the tree, not beside it. We bent the home into a soft L, wrapping two wings around the tamarind so it became the heart of an open courtyard. From the living room, the tree is the view.

The western wing carries a run of vertical timber fins that filter a Karnataka afternoon into stripes across the floor. They shade the deep veranda and keep the rooms cool. That single move is why he now reads at dawn with the lights off.

By the time the plan was drawn, no one could imagine the house without the tree at its centre.

A moment we remember

On the morning of the housewarming, we found him alone on the finished veranda, watching the light come through the fins onto the courtyard floor. He said the tree looked happy to have company.
